"Memory: Notes to Myself" is a
painting about the African American Diaspora. Many people
of African descent have lost their roots, and have no
way to trace their lineage.
This painting is dedicated to the loss experienced
by the African American people, in America, the Caribbean, Africa, South
America. So many people of African descent around the world are part
of the Diaspora.
In this painting, the doorways in the background
symbolize village huts and a lost way of life. Notes adorn the side
of the painting; the notes are symbolic of memories that are linked
but not whole. The notes are strung together with copper wire.
The palette
in this painting is vibrant, with rich greens and blues, and copper,
set off with a rich black background. This painting is assembled. It has strong Haitian and African art influence.
