Erzulie is the Goddess of Love in the
Haitian religion, VouDou. She has a special place among the many
devotees who gather every year at Saut D'Eau to honor her. The
Saut D'Eau waterfall descends over 100 feet, among vines, shallow
pools, and mossy ledges. Devotees bathe in the water and ask for
blessings and healings from Erzulie. Erzulie is sometimes compared
to the Virgin Mary of the Christian religion.
In this painting of Erzulie, I made her larger than life, because
she is a Goddess. In one hand is a dove (for Spirit); in the other
hand is a serpent, representing knowledge.
