From the beginning, music
has been and integral part of the African American community
and has served as a cohesive force, uniting African and
African American people. It is a power that can be called
upon to soothe our pain and lift our spirits in times
of extreme hardship or to lift us even higher in times
of bountiful joy. Music is a common thread which has bonded
African American people together throughout history. from
the African villages to in the belly of slave ships, to
the fields of southern plantations and segregated civil
war camps, to the churches and civil rights marches, all
the way to present day. Music has comforted and strengthened
African American people, holding us together. United.
United in song.
