America has two presidential rulebooks. One is a leather-bound constitutional volume applied to Barack Obama with an electron microscope, written in concrete, wrapped in barbed wire, and underlined with two centuries of racial suspicion.

Obama could not sneeze without Republicans investigating whether the mist contained socialism. He wore a tan suit, and conservative America reacted as though he had urinated on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He asked for Dijon mustard, and suddenly every diner waitress in Alabama was defending Western civilization from uppity condiments.

The GOP had their heads so far up Obama’s behind that, had he passed gas, he’d have blown their heads clean off.

The other rulebook is applied to Donald Trump - or, more accurately, bestowed upon him. It is a Waffle House children’s menu printed in disappearing ink, bound with rubber, along with three broken crayons and a note saying, Do whatever feels right, Big Fella. Its central commandment reads: The White man may do as he pleases, provided he terrifies the right people and calls it American Exceptionalism.

So let us stop making believe, acting like the difference is merely partisan.

Obama was not simply a Democratic president. He was a Black president presiding over a country that had legally segregated people who looked like him during his own lifetime. His election cracked something deep inside White America’s historical attic, where the old ropes, robes, torches, badges, deeds, covenants, and Confederate keepsakes were never packed up and given to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

Had Obama done what Trump has done, Republicans would not merely be demanding impeachment. They would be calling for prison, exile, military tribunals - and, in the darker corners of American tradition, punishment administered the old-fashioned way reserved for Black men who forgot their assigned place.

“Get a rope, boys!”

Here, then, is the “What If Obama Had Done It?” Dirty Dozen.

1. What if Obama had turned the presidency into a family cryptocurrency casino?

Trump reported more than $1.4 billion in 2025 income from his family’s cryptocurrency ventures. Reuters estimates that the Trump family has added at least $2.3 billion to its fortune through its principal crypto hustles and cons since he returned to the Oval Office.

Perhaps your foreign government, corporation, or billionaire benefactor will enjoy favorable treatment. Nothing to see here - just the commander-in-chief operating a family cash machine from inside the Oval Office.

If Obama had launched “BarryCoin,” Republicans would have accused him of inventing cryptocurrency in Kenya to finance a second Black Panther Party. Federal agents would have raided Sasha’s dormitory looking for a laptop, a ledger, and Malcolm X’s fingerprints.

2. What if Malia and Sasha had made one penny from their father’s presidency?

Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump travel the world promoting family ventures while their father controls American sanctions, banking rules, taxation, foreign policy, and cryptocurrency regulation. The Trump boys are not merely standing near the gravy train. They are selling tickets, shoveling coal, and charging foreign investors extra to meet the conductor.

Yet Republicans who treated Hunter Biden’s laptop like the Dead Sea Scrolls suddenly cannot locate their reading glasses.

If Malia had sold one “Yes We Can” coffee mug to a Canadian businessman, Jim Jordan would have appeared at dawn without a jacket, sleeves rolled up, demanding her bank records. If Sasha had earned twelve dollars promoting “Obama Socks” on Instagram, Fox News would have run a week-long special titled, The Audacity of Graft.

Trump’s children can harvest millions around the globe. Obama’s daughters could not have operated a lemonade stand without Congress subpoenaing the lemons.

3. What if Obama had accepted a luxury airplane from Qatar?

Trump’s administration accepted a lavish Boeing 747 from Qatar for presidential use, with arrangements envisioning its eventual transfer to his presidential library.

A foreign monarchy presented the American president with a flying palace, and MAGA responded with the moral intensity of cattle watching rain.

If Qatar had given Obama a used 77’ Buick, Republicans would have demanded his arrest before the oil dried on the dipstick. They would have searched the glove compartment for secret Muslim instructions and accused Michelle of accepting the floor mats as an illegal foreign contribution.

4. What if Obama had pardoned a mob that attacked the Capitol for him?

Trump granted clemency to roughly 1,500 January 6 defendants, including people convicted of assaulting police officers. The president who inspired the uprising returned to power and liberated many of those punished for carrying it out.

Republicans once marketed themselves as the party of “law and order.” Apparently, the order was: attack the law, then await your pardon.

Had a mostly Black Obama mob smashed Capitol windows, beaten police officers, erected a gallows, and hunted Republican lawmakers, the National Guard would not have been posing for photographs. Hundreds would have been gunned down like rabid dogs - no question about it. Bodies would have been stacked on those marble steps while cable-news patriots explained that unfortunate force had been necessary.

And had Obama pardoned the survivors, Congress would have impeached him before the ink reached the paper.

5. What if Obama had attempted to overturn an election?

Trump pressured election officials, promoted counterfeit electors, spread lies about fraud, encouraged his followers to gather in Washington, and tried to remain in office after losing.

If Obama had telephoned a Republican official asking him to “find” one vote, the Right would have called it the greatest act of Black lawlessness since Nat Turner. Conservative politicians would have demanded a military tribunal while assuring us, with moist eyes and solemn voices, that this was not about race.

It never is about race, according to the people who somehow keep arriving with ropes whenever a Black man frightens them.

6. What if Obama had taken classified documents home?

Trump carried boxes of sensitive government records to Mar-a-Lago, stored them around a ballroom and bathroom, resisted efforts to retrieve them, and was criminally charged. His return to power effectively rescued him before the case reached trial.

Had Obama taken home a classified White House lunch menu, federal agents would have descended upon his property in armored vehicles. Sean Hannity would have broadcast from a nearby bunker wearing night-vision goggles.

Republicans would have suggested Obama planned to sell national secrets to Africa - as though Africa were one country, because geography has never been permitted to interfere with a good racial panic.

7. What if Obama had been convicted of 34 felonies?

A New York jury convicted Trump on 34 felony counts involving falsified business records. Republicans reacted by deciding jury verdicts were merely optional opinions issued by twelve deep-state Yelp reviewers.

Had Obama been convicted of 34 felonies, he would not have been renominated. He would have been frog-marched across the White House lawn while evangelical preachers thanked God for preserving righteousness.

Trump receives appeals, immunity arguments, delays, deference, elected King again. America’s traditional response to an allegedly dangerous Black man has been rather less patient: capture him, humiliate him, cage him - and sometimes arrange for the courthouse doors to be conveniently unlocked when the mob arrives.

8. What if Obama had been found liable for sexually abusing a White woman?

Civil juries found Trump liable for sexually abusing and repeatedly defaming E. Jean Carroll. The family-values movement shrugged so violently it nearly dislocated a shoulder.

Imagine Barack Obama approaching a White woman in an elevator, department store, hotel corridor, or anywhere else beyond the protective presence of three witnesses and a surveillance camera. Had a jury later found him liable for sexual abuse, parts of White America would not have settled for damages, prison, or political ruin.

This country possesses a long, blood-soaked history of accusing Black men of violating White womanhood and then reaching for the rope, the knife, the fire, and the nearest tree. Black men were lynched, mutilated, and castrated over allegations requiring less evidence than Trump’s civil trial produced.

Trump can be adjudicated responsible and remain MAGA’s orange messiah. Obama would have been marked for death on the accusation alone.

9. What if Obama had defied a federal judge and shipped people to a foreign prison?

The Trump administration flew Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador after a federal judge ordered the deportations halted. A judge found probable cause to consider whether officials had deliberately defied the court.

Human beings were shipped away without meaningful opportunities to challenge the accusations against them, while the administration behaved as though judicial orders were suggestions from an irritating substitute teacher.

Had Obama ignored a federal judge to deport one conservative activist to Canada, Republicans would have compared him to Stalin, Mao, Idi Amin, and whichever dictator Wikipedia placed closest to the search box.

10. What if Obama had tried to revise the Constitution by executive order?

Trump attempted to restrict birthright citizenship despite the plain language and established meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment.

MAGA calls itself constitutionalist until the Constitution starts protecting people MAGA would prefer to frighten, deport, or erase. Then the sacred document becomes a restaurant menu: substitutions permitted, minorities extra.

Had Obama proposed altering one comma in the Second Amendment, armed patriots would have surrounded Washington carrying muskets, protein bars, and enough tactical equipment to invade Belgium.

11. What if Obama had used presidential power to punish enemies?

Trump has threatened perceived adversaries, demanded investigations, attacked journalists, pressured universities, targeted law firms, and treated federal power like a personalized Louisville Slugger.

The message is unmistakable: praise the king, pay the family, bend the knee - or prepare to have the machinery of government parked on your chest.

If Obama had demanded an investigation of Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity, Republicans would have declared the Republic dead by sundown. If his administration had targeted conservative churches, White America would have remembered every church bombing in history - but somehow forgotten that Black churches have actually been bombed, burned, shot into, and terrorized.

Had Obama behaved like Trump, how long before somebody firebombed his former Chicago church? America has burned Black churches for less: registering voters, demanding equality, sheltering organizers, or merely standing upright on land White supremacy considered its private inheritance.

Four Black girls were murdered in Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. That is not rhetorical decoration. It is American precedent.

12. What if Obama had openly converted public office into private wealth?

Trump has maintained business interests while governing, sold political proximity through branded ventures, hosted major buyers of his meme coin, and positioned his family inside a global marketplace where influence and profit mingle like bourbon and corruption at a country-club bar.

If Obama had charged five dollars for a White House selfie, Republicans would have accused him of selling Mount Rushmore to Beyoncé. Michelle would have been investigated. Malia and Sasha would have been followed, audited, threatened, and dragged before committees.

That is the critical obscenity: Trump is not escaping accountability because his behavior is considered normal. He is escaping because millions of Americans grant aggressive White power a presumption of legitimacy while treating Black authority as inherently suspicious.

Obama had to be Jackie Robinson in the White House - controlled, polished, gracious, brilliant, and emotionally bulletproof. He could never look too angry, sound too Black, defend himself too forcefully, or allow one family member to appear insufficiently grateful. One false move and America’s racial umpires were prepared to throw him out of the game.

Trump, meanwhile, can drive a gold-plated bulldozer through the Constitution, back over the Bill of Rights, sell tickets to the wreckage, and hire his children to run the concession stand.

Obama wore a tan suit, and White conservatism behaved as though he had strangled a bald eagle during the national anthem. Trump monetizes the presidency, pardons political violence, defies courts, attacks elections, hoards secrets, threatens enemies, and funnels billions toward the family register - and MAGA suddenly develops the moral eyesight of three blind mice trapped in a coal mine at midnight.

It is Black versus White - and which man America instinctively believes belongs in command, which man must continually prove his innocence, and which one can stand in broad daylight with the loot spilling from his pockets. At the same time, the nation insists it sees nothing.

White folks created this twisted game, and Black folks are forced to play it.
